Chris Brown @ Brisbane Entertainment Centre
Friday, April 29th, 2011
I first saw Chris Brown on stage in 2007 as a support act and was so in awe of his talent that Beyonce as the headliner was underwhelming.
The following year, he joined then-girlfriend Rihanna for the Oceania leg of her Good Girl Gone Bad tour and while her performance blew me away, I left disappointed with his act. Mostly because half of it was lip-synced (and who wants to pay to see that?).
Since then, a lot has changed for Brown. He's made headlines around the world for all the wrong reasons and his image will never be the same.
Given Ticketek's three for one ticket deal on the day of the concert, I wasn't sure what to expect going into the Brisbane leg of his F.A.M.E tour.
However, his talent is undeniable and he certainly put on a memorable show for the bigger-than-expected Brisbane crowd, despite feeling "under the weather".
And while vocally he showed some signs of wear, Brown delivered on the most spectacular aspect of his live performance and what many fans go to see – the dancing.
It almost made up for the apparent lip-syncing during some of the faster songs, as the choreography was executed with synchronised professionalism.
A hard-hitting military themed first section including I Can Transform Ya and Wall to Wall got the audience heated up before he slowed things down and appealed to the ladies in the audience with "Yo", and they lapped up every second of it.
He continued in this vein and transitioned into the "sexy" part of his set with such lyrically subtle numbers as Wet the Bed, Take you Down and No BS.
The ladies in the audience apparently couldn't get enough attention and went absolutely wild every time he even looked like taking his shirt off to flaunt his heavily tattooed upper body... and when he did, it was deafening.
After a slightly boring R n B heavy middle section he included some more well-known ballads with No Air, Crawl, and With You before rounding out the night with show highlights Yeah 3x, Forever and encore Beautiful People.
Brown's set had a good mix of hits from his four albums and mostly held the audience's interest, while the DJ and backup singers helped to keep the energy up during costume changes.
Supporting act Jessica Mauboy certainly set the standard for the headliner, almost flawlessly pulling off a pumping, upbeat set.
Mauboy looked as if she was having the time of her life, strutting her way around the stage in a daring, skin-tight black spandex ensemble with silver glittery booties.
She sang through a string of her hits including Been Waiting, Running Back and Saturday Night, and invited fellow Australian Idol alum, Stan Walker, to the stage to perform her current single What Happened to Us.
Her suggestive dancing and powerhouse vocals show she's come a long way in the five years since Idol and is sure to have a solid career ahead of her.

About a week ago, Justin Bieber tweeted that he was planning something special with Chris Brown on the Australian tour. That was taken to be a collaboration at one of the shows.
Chris Brown and Justin Bieber are both currently on tour in Australia.
Last night, Bieber performed at Acer Arena in Sydney and Brown joined him to sing 'Look At Me Now'.
It was a case of "the show must go on" for Bieber who yesterday morning looked like he might have to cancel the show. On doctor's orders, Bieber who is suffering a back injury, was advised not to go ahead with the show but yesterday afternoon he was given the all-clear to perform.
Justin Bieber will perform again tonight in Sydney at Acer Arena.
He will play Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena on Monday and Tuesday.

Chris Brown has dropped the hint that he and Justin Bieber may soon share the stage in Australia. Both singers are touring in the country and Brown teased fans via Twitter earlier this week saying that they should look out for the pair.
He wrote: "AUSTRALIA . . . we are coming . . . and there might be some surprises." The post was followed by a link to Brown and Bieber's collaboration on the track "Next 2 U." It's been a busy few months for Brown, who recently connected in the studio with M.I.A. and producer Polow Da Don.
In an update to his Twitter feed Polow revealed that the trio was hard at work on new material and it marked a high point in his career.
"IN THE LAB WIT THE GREAT @chrisbrown AND THE INCREDIBLE @_M_I_A_ THANK YOU DEAR LORD!" tweeted Polow. "I've WAITED ON THIS MOMENT MY WHOLE CAREER!!!! ITS HAPPENING!!!! MAGIC is UPON US!!!! LEH GO!!!!" he tweeted.
Brown has also recently collaborated with Joe Jonas and rapper Asher Roth.

Chris Brown has taken some time out from the Australian leg of his 'F.A.M.E' tour to do some charity work.
The 'Yeah x3' singer, who is performing all over the country this month, met up with 10 youths from Best Buddies Australia at a bowling alley in Sydney last week.
Brown has reportedly been involved with the one-on-one support program for young people with intellectual disabilities for about two years.
The charity's boss Mark Trevaskis told The Daily Telegraph: "He has been involved with the charity in the US and we were thrilled that he has taken some time out of his schedule to come and be with us and play a couple of games of tenpin."
Since arriving in Australia, Brown has been spotted partying with singer Jessica Mauboy. He has spent lots of time interacting with fans and signing autographs after each show.

While Chris Brown told MTV News about his latest album, F.A.M.E., he also spilled on how he paid tribute to the legend himself, Michael Jackson with his new single "She Ain't You". MTV says that the record, which samples "Human Nature," is currently on the top of the Billboard Hip Hop & R&B charts.
We just thought to let you know that F.A.M.E. is one of our favorite albums, if not the favorite album of 2011. So make sure you pick it up now if you haven't already.
During the F.A.M.E. launch we've seen Bow Wow all over the place, he gave his reaction to Chris's F.A.M.E. LP going gold in three weeks, do you think Bow's next album will be bigger than his last, especially since it will be his first off Lil Wayne's Young Money Cash Money label?

NO ONE knows how to party like US R'n'B sensation Chris Brown.
The sometimes controversial 21-year-old took his smooth moves from the Entertainment Centre to Apple Bar nightclub after his concert on Wednesday night.
Wearing a white tank top showing off his numerous tattoos and a blue Los Angeles Dodgers baseball cap, Chris and his entourage partied long into the night surrounded by a bevy of beautiful women. Not content with the female attention at Apple, Chris and his crew kicked on at The Palace gentleman's club on Hindley St, where the urban star was apparently very well looked after by the ladies.
However, Confidential understands Chris - whose latest album F.A.M.E. has topped the US Billboard charts - left an incredibly small tip. Very poor form.
Meanwhile, one of his support acts, Justice Crew, were spotted getting haircuts at Joseph Fedele Men's Hair Stylist on Bank St before performing on Wednesday.
SPEAKING of celebs partying into the night, last weekend it was MasterChef winner Adam Liaw kicking on at Supermild in Hindley St until the wee hours of Saturday morning.
Huddled at the back of the beer garden and chatting to a female companion, former Adelaidean Adam even let his top-knotted hair down - literally.

IT HAS taken controversial R'n'B singer Chris Brown two years to reclaim his international career.
But last night it took his loyal fans less than two hours to welcome him back on centre stage.
The 21-year-old kicked off his worldwide F.A.M.E. tour in Australia at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
It was the American's third tour to Australia - his last was in 2008 when he toured with then-girlfriend Rihanna.
At the time, they were two of the world's hottest stars who just happened to be dating.
Brown was a star on the rise but in 2009 his career was derailed after he assaulted her.
But last night his fans - mostly young girls - seemed to forgive his past mistakes - well, for a few hours at least so they could sing and dance.
It was clear the crowd came to simply judge him as Chris Brown the singer and they were pleased.

It seems embattled R&B star Chris Brown is getting advice from everyone nowadays. One advisor is Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, who recently offered Brown a few words of advice and encouragement.
"Just put your faith in God," Vick told Brown in an interview with Lee Hawkins of the Wall Street Journal. "Don't worry about what people say about you. Words will never hurt you. The things that people can say out of their mouth can cut you deep. And sometimes a tongue can be sharper than a knife. But at the same time, you should never allow that to push you over the edge. You should have more self-control. You control your own destiny. You're still admired by so many people."
Brown allegedly became violent in his dressing room recently while on the set of Good Morning America. The incident occured after he was asked about his domestic violence case involving Rihanna.
